What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The state maintains a list of over 900 such chemicals, and businesses must inform Californians about exposures to these chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.

Why is there a warning on BIGHORN products?

At BIGHORN Mountain Food, we prioritize transparency and customer safety. Some of our ingredients, such as rice, spices, and certain vegetables, can naturally absorb trace amounts of heavy metals like lead and cadmium from the soil and water. While these amounts are minimal and often below federal safety standards, California's Prop 65 has more stringent thresholds, requiring warnings even for these trace levels.

Are BIGHORN products safe?

Yes. Our products are crafted with high-quality ingredients and adhere to strict safety standards set by federal agencies like the FDA and USDA. We conduct regular testing to ensure our meals meet or exceed these standards. The Prop 65 warning is provided to comply with California law and to inform our customers, not because our products pose any significant health risk.

How do Prop 65 levels compare to other standards?

California's Prop 65 sets exposure limits that are often significantly lower than those established by other regulatory bodies. For example, the maximum allowable dose level (MADL) for lead under Prop 65 is 0.5 micrograms per day, which is much lower than limits set by the FDA or WHO. This means that products may require a warning in California even if they are considered safe by other standards.
